MAKAAM was part of a panel discussion on ‘Ensuring Gender Equality in Sustainable Transitions in Agriculture’ (YouTube link) at this conference organised by IRMA and NRAS.
- Ms. Shilpa Vasavada (MAKAAM NFT member) moderated the session and introduced MAKAAM and its aim to secure recognition and rights for women in agriculture.
- Dr. Sumi Krishna (IAWS) emphasized the need to establish normative principles recognizing women as farmers and addressed customary gender roles in farming knowledge.
- Ms. Seema Kulkarni (MAKAAM NFT and SOPPECOM) discussed initiatives in Maharashtra that focus on strengthening distressed migrant women and women from farm suicide households through agroecology programs.
- Mr. Narendranath Damodaran (PRADAN) discussed the interconnectedness of ecology, economy, and equity in agricultural transitions, highlighting the need to address women’s exclusion and inequality. He explained how an organization’s internal gender sensitization is crucial for effective external interventions.
- Ms. Sabarmatee (Sambhav) shared her experiences on the importance of women’s contributions in agriculture, specifically in seed conservation.
